What ISP do you have? Empty What ISP do you have?

Post  Vandal Thu Jun 18, 2009 7:44 am

What ISP do you have and are you happy with them? I have the 12 mpbs service from Comcast. Honestly, it is not bad. Plenty of bandwidth to use Xbox Live, stream Netflix, stream Hulu, and just general surfing. I think my bottleneck is my (at least) 3 year old Linksys router. I need to replace that thing.

Side question: What type of router do you have and are you happy with it. As mentioned above, mine is a Linksys WRT54G from 3 years ago. Is it time for a new one?

I've got the Comcast one that lets me on the internet, and that's about all I could tell you. I sure am a stickler for details.

I have Cox, because that's the only thing that's available oddly enough. Its quite expensive. No problems yet.

My router is that Belkin ant head thing that I got for free using a hot deal, its over ten years old and working great no thanks to Chris' nay saying.

I have Comcast and honestly, it's great. I get over a 20 Mbit download speed when I run a speed test on www.speedtest.net.

Wow. It certainly isn't that fast in CT. They must've rolled out new service out where you are. CT gets everything last in this part of the country.

For an international data point, I use J:Com @ Home. Over my wireless connection, I got 16 Mbit download using the same test as Guy. Although I don't get a choice for provider, what with living in a large apartment building and all, on the plus side, the building is already wired up like a dorm room - just plug into the wall and go!

    I got Cox, like Mike.
Results of three consecutive speed tests, a little after midnight.

Seems a little too good to be true. But I can't complain about Cox. I haven't had a single noticeable outage since I've lived here. Comcast used to randomly drop for a couple of hours on average once a month.

My mom's internet is Optimum Online, which I recall being extremely fast. Like pissing on Cox and Comcast.

I have this overpriced monster of a router.

I see they changed their site; I hadn't been there in a couple of months. I just did some tests as well...

Your upload speeds are kind of crummy. I'm curious what I have. I'll do a speed test when I get home today.

I'm not personally too concerned with my upload speeds.

All broadband provders allocate most of their bandwidth for downstream since that is what the vast majority of people need. I'd rather have 31 down and 7 up (not Sprite - HA!) than 24 down and 14 up. Even if you were a business a 7Mb upload is 4.5x faster than a T1. Obviously a T1 is dedicated and cable is shared, but it's the best bang for your buck speed you will find.

Speakeasy.net Speed test was also consistent with the above results. These tests were performed after replacing the firmware on my router with DD-WRT.

It would have been interesting to see actual results before you flashed your router.
